ANDORRA: Cava at Yonge & St. Clair #WORLDINMYCITY

Andorra is a tiny little country nestled between France and Spain in the Pyrenees mountains. Escudella is often referred to as Andorra's national dish. We wanted to eat traditional escudella for the Andorra stop, and while it wasn't readily available on any Toronto restaurant menus, we found a few spots that were willing to put their chefs to the test and put it on their Saturday evening menu. Typically eaten in winter, this dish is a big meaty hearty stew that will make meat-lovers very happy. We found the perfect place to make us escudella... Cava at Yonge and St. Clair. A restaurant that proudly invites diners to "Just Let Us Cook For You" is exactly what we needed. And you should definitely let Cava cook for you... look at what came to the table leading up to the main star of the dinner...

Escudella means bowl and it is traditionally cooked up for family gatherings like a Christmas feast. It's a huge stew prepared as a one-pot winter meal, with a variety of vegetables and a selection of different meats such as veal, meatballs, chicken, pig snout/trotters, and delicious butifarra sausage which is a very juicy pork sausage that is an important part of Catalan cuisine. Even though it was a beautiful mild April evening, we were very happy to see this steaming hot stew arrive at the table. It was perfect.

It was served with lovely vegetables that were a crisp and fresh complement to all that hot, juicy, delicious meat.

It never fails to amaze me how even after eating an enormous amount of savoury hearty food, you can still have room for something sweet, like churros con chocolate.

Thanks Andorra... you inspired a wonderfully creative meal and thank you Cava for doing the research into the dish and making it for us. Cava is located at 1560 Yonge Street near St. Clair, and it has the loveliest patio I can't wait to return to this summer. It was incredible! Rosie :)

ALGERIA: Morocco House in Etobicoke #WORLDINMYCITY

When researching traditional Algerian food, we quickly realized that we had to have tangine and coucous. And we learned that one of the best places to have those dishes in Toronto is at Morocco House, on Brown's Line in south Etobicoke.

Tangine is a North African stew of spiced meat and vegetables that is cooked slowly in a shallow earthenware dish. This beef tagine was loaded with vegetables and chunks of juicy braised beef that melted in your mouth. The olives were amazing salty flavour bombs and there were lots of them, which always makes me happy.

The chicken couscous was filled with caramelized onions, raisins and chickpeas, cooked with spices that were fragrant and lovely. A great third stop on the #WorldInOurCity tour! Rosie :)

ALBANIA: Mrakovic Meat & Deli in Etobicoke #WORLDINMYCITY

For the next country on the list, I have to give a shout-out to Chowhound user Googs who gave me a great suggestion on where to find traditional eastern European food in Toronto. Mrakovic Meat & Deli is located in Etobicoke, in a plaza near the 427 and Eglinton area. While the Scoop will travel to any part of the GTA for amazing food, the west side of the city is a little more convenient and it's always wonderful to find treasures like this close to your hood that you didn't even know about! So thanks Googs! We had the ćevapi, which is a grilled dish of minced meat found traditionally in the countries of southeastern Europe (usually lamb, veal, pork or beef served with onion.) It was delicious, especially the bread the kebabs were nestled in which was so fresh, light and fluffy:

Burek, which is flaky pastry stuffed full of any combination of meat, cheese, spinach and/or potatoes, is a staple in the cuisines of Balkans. It's so popular here at Mrakovic that they giggled at us when we tried to buy it in the late afternoon. All the fresh burek was sold out. So we bought a frozen meat burek and baked it the next day, and it was delicous.

Mrakovic Meat & Deli serves daily-cooked homemade hot meals and salads. You can take-out or dine in. It is also a grocery store and deli where you can order all sorts of fresh meats and traditional southeastern European foods. Mrakovic is located in Etobicoke at 44 Wellesworth Drive. AFGHANISTAN: Mazar Kabob in Etobicoke #WORLDINMYCITY

The Scoop is very excited to start a brand new project today! For every single country in the world, we are going to find a restaurant in Toronto (or the GTA) & eat there. It's called #WorldInMyCity and we start in Afghanistan (yes we are going alphabetically.) There is no specific way we are choosing the restaurants... it's a mixture of recommendations, proximity, driving by and saying THAT LOOKS GOOD... so if you have a suggestion for any country please let me know! We started in the west side of Toronto at Mazar Kabob on the West Mall. The meals come with salad, grilled vegetables and perfect naan bread. The tandoori chicken was delicious and spicy:
